Fred W. Stabley Sr. Scholarship for Sports Journalism
David and Susan Peterson established this scholarship to foster the next generation of Spartan sports journalists in honor of Susan’s late father, Fred Stabley Sr.. Stabley served as MSU’s sports information director from 1948-1981. He was one of the original inductees into the MSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1992, was inducted into the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2024, and in 1969 was named a charter member of the Hall of Fame of the College Sports Information Directors of America, which he helped found. Stabley started his career as a reporter and city editor with the Gazette and Daily in York, Pennsylvania, and earned his master’s degree from MSU.
Qualifications:
- Journalism major with a concentration or minor in Sports Journalism
- Preference will be given to students who meet one or more of the following criteria:
- Senior status by the upcoming fall, when the scholarship is disbursed.
- Demonstrated interest in sports information at the collegiate level
