The Michael Elliott Award for Excellence in African Storytelling 2024, presented by the Elliott family, the ONE Campaign, and the International Centre for Journalists (ICFJ), is now accepting entries.
This award recognizes emerging journalists in Africa dedicated to amplifying voices and shedding light on the transformative changes unfolding across the continent.
Submissions must showcase groundbreaking journalistic work published between December 1, 2022, and December 1, 2023.
Winners will be chosen based on the excellence of their articles and the tangible impact of their work on communities.
Exceptional entries across all media are encouraged, particularly those showcasing analytical skills alongside outstanding writing abilities.
Established in honor of Michael Elliott, a remarkable editor, philanthropist, and former ICFJ director, the Award pays tribute to the influential role of storytelling in bearing witness to and enhancing the human condition.
Elliott’s distinguished career included editorships at The Economist, Newsweek, and Time, culminating in his role as CEO of ONE.
In 2016, he articulated a vision to create an award uniting his belief in exceptional journalism with a commitment to progress in Africa.
This prestigious annual accolade recognizes emerging journalists in Africa dedicated to empowering voices and spotlighting transformative change on the continent.
Previous recipients of the award include outstanding journalists such as Mercy Juma and Dorcas Wangira from Kenya, Kiki Mordi, Abubakar Ibrahim, Zainab Bala, and Adekunle Adebajo from Nigeria, Farai Shawn Matiashe from Zimbabwe, and Bernadette Vivuya from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
An esteemed international jury, comprising media leaders from the US, UK, and Africa, will be responsible for selecting the winners.
All applicants will be notified of their status by the spring of 2024 through communication from ICFJ.
