The Institute for Humane Studies at George Mason University is the leading institute in higher education dedicated to championing classical liberal ideas and the scholars who advance them. The Humane Studies Fellowship offers three types of support to graduate students, awarded on a rolling basis, of up to $15,000 per year. This fellowship is intended for graduate students with an interest in developing, teaching, and applying classical liberal ideas and the principles of a free society, this program supports research and teaching in the humanities and social sciences. Conference Accelerator Grants provide up to $2,000 for master's and PhD students who haven't advanced to candidacy. Publication Accelerator Grants provide up to $5,000 to support students with an established publishing record who commit to submitting an article to a leading journal within the next six months. Graduate Sabbatical Grants provide up to $15,000 to PhD candidates (ABD) to buy out teaching or research responsibilities for a semester. These grants are highly competitive and can be renewed. IHS grants cannot support institutional overhead or indirect costs. Sabbatical grant applications should be submitted at least three months before the semester begins. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Applicants will be notified of their award within eight weeks of submission.

Eligibility: previous applicants and winners are welcome to apply; students can receive up to three concurrent grants Prior participation in IHS programs is not required available to students at any university international students are eligible; priority given to applicants at top research institutions Conference & Publication Accelerator Grants: applicants must be full-time students enrolled in a master's or Ph.D. program Graduate Sabbatical Grants: applicants must have published previously or have an article currently under review applicants must be enrolled as full-time PhD students who have advanced to candidacy Qualifying fields of study include economics, political science, philosophy, law, history, sociology, and similar disciplines in the social sciences and humanities. IHS generally does not fund students studying the natural sciences, medicine, or engineering.
