VERY IMPORTANT: We would love to offer you the opportunity and experience of caring for our Corfiot Donkeys. We do not charge you anything to join our program but you must book your own flights, accommodation and transport. All food and entertainment costs are also payable by you. We would love for you to join us.
Corfu Donkey Rescue is the only donkey rescue on the island of Corfu. Before Corfu Donkey Rescue existed, unwanted donkeys were simply abandoned or sold to dealers who exported them to Italy essentially for slaughter.
After many years of dedicated work, our donkeys deserve a comfortable retirement and this is what we try to do.
As a volunteer you will be expected to help with the day to day running of the shelter. There's a lot of cleaning up to do, along with feeding, grooming, giving medication, looking out for signs of illness or any irregularities in a donkey's behaviour. Donkey and dog walking are also important tasks.
We are a very small animal shelter. We have accommodation only for animals and our founder, Judy. Volunteers are expected to find their own local accommodation and we give a number of suggestions on our website.
The sanctuary is situated in a very rural area so it's generally very peaceful and tranquil. There are tea and coffee making facilities and a seating area for volunteers to eat their pre-prepared food. There is one WC which is communal.
We have few permanent staff who work on a rota basis, also 5 days per week from 08:30 to 17:30. Our number of volunteers varies greatly depending on the time of year and locals are very welcoming so there will always be a smiling face.
We expect our volunteers to be punctual, flexible, physically fit, attentive and keen to learn. In return we will be there to support you and to show you how to complete your daily tasks to get the most from your stay.
No special equipment is required. Only clothes and shoes appropriate to the season in which you are travelling. Winter - conditions can be cold and wet and therefore muddy. Summer - the weather is hot and humid and much time is spent outdoors. Whatever the season - ALWAYS wear sensible shoes that give support and comfort.
