Description

Howard Sleath in 1974

The Howard and Gladys Sleath Scholarship is awarded to the Bachelor of Music (Honours) applicant showing greatest merit in an audition on an orchestral stringed instrument played with a bow.

Established in 1998 by a bequest by Howard Sleath of 50% of his estate to The University of Queensland. Mr Howard Sleath was well-known to instrumentalists throughout Australia for the excellence of his craftsmanship and skill as a maker of stringed instruments.

Mr Sleath gave the State of Queensland a string quartet of instruments to be kept under the supervision of the Head of the School of Music. The instruments were first demonstrated by the Mayne String Quartet at a concert to inaugurate the Howard Sleath Quartet of Instruments in 1974.
