Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships

The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) program is a fully-funded scholarship opportunity for doctoral students in Canada. Named after Major-General Georges P. Vanier, the first francophone Governor General of Canada, this program aims to attract and retain world-class doctoral students by supporting those who demonstrate leadership skills and high scholarly achievement.

Who can apply

  • Citizenship: Canadian citizens, permanent residents of Canada, or foreign citizens.
  • Areas of research: Health research, natural sciences and/or engineering, social sciences and humanities.
  • Candidates must be nominated by a Canadian institution with a quota to host Vanier scholars.

What the scholarship covers

The Vanier CGS provides up to 166 scholarships annually, each valued at $50,000 per year for three years during doctoral studies. The scholarships are distributed equally between the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). Selection criteria include academic excellence, research potential, and leadership.
