There are certain requirement to apply for the visas which you can check at the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) for the latest visa requirements.

As part of the Australian Visas application, it is required that applicant must provide evidence of English language. This can be done by taking IELTS (The International English Language Testing System)  or PTE (The Pearson Test of English).

A massive PTE Question Bank is at the centre of this exam, that was launched by Pearson in 2009 and the latest entrants into the field of testing and certifying English language proficiency of non-native English speakers. The QCA and administered in alliance with Edexcel, UK’s largest examining body, accredits the PTE.

IELTS is a standardized test administered by the British Council, IDP Education and Cambridge English Language Assessment. The test was planted in1989 to test and accredit the proficiency of the non-native English speakers.

Proving applicant’s English proficiency is one of a must requirement for almost all type of Australian visa. Previously it was only required for student visas. But now skilled, work and holiday, temporary graduate, and former resident visa programmes requires PTE Academic by the Department of Immigration & Border Protection (DIBP).

It is crucial to scores in PTE Academic which to prove English proficiency and it’s using a point system with a minimum score required. However, since there are many types of visas the minimum point is differs depending on visa type.

Family-stream visas do not require you to take any PTE exam for immigration to Australia. On the other hand, work visas make it compulsory to prove your proficiency level in English. For PTE Academic, a minimum of 50 points are needed to be eligible to apply for Australia PR. But, you won’t receive additional points with 50 PTE score. To get further points, an applicant requires 65 points in each segment of reading, writing, speaking and listening. You will acquire 10 points if you score PTE 65 Points. However, to earn the PR status, they would have to increase their English proficiency levels next.

The higher your immigration points, you will have better chances for an invitation and getting visas. Alternatively, you may also consider taking IELTS if you find PTE tough! Both the exams are equally acceptable by the Australian immigration department. Besides, IELTS has some fixed test sessions per year. TOEFL also offers 50+ test events every year. However, you can take PTE for Australian PR 365 days a year worldwide which enabling you to run your visa process further. PTE Academic is the most preferable worldwide as the scores can be used to apply for an unlimited number of institutions (such as colleges and universities as well as visa and immigration authorities of Australia and New Zealand). Whilst, IELTS allows you to apply to five institutions for free and TOEFL permits only 4 free reports.
