Open to: candidates with a very strong background in physics, chemistry, material science, or engineering with an interest in solar cells
Venue: Netherlands Foundation of Scientific Research Institutes

Description

Solar cells made from hybrid perovskite semiconductors have emerged only recently, yet their efficiency is already comparable to that of silicon solar cells. In contrast to the rapid progress in efficiency, our understanding of why hybrid perovskite solar cells perform so well is lacking. Charge-carrier recombination is one of the most important properties of a solar-cell material, and in hybrid perovskites it is unusually slow. In this project you will investigate the origin of this unusually slow recombination. The bandstructure of these perovskites is different from most common semiconductors, and you will investigate how changing the bandstructure will affect the recombination dynamics, as well as the consequences of those changes for perovskite solar cells.

You will study the optical and electrical properties of the perovskites under hydrostatic pressure, both in steady-state and time-resolved. The Hybrid Solar Cell Group focuses on novel paths towards more efficient solar cells using both organic and inorganic materials. We aim at combining the unique properties and the richness of organic materials with the highly efficient, well-characterised inorganic materials.We provide a highly collaborative environment, both within the group and with our national and international collaborators.

Eligibility

  • Candidates with a very strong background in physics, chemistry, material science, or engineering with an interest in solar cells;
  • Candidates will need to meet the requirements for an MSc-degree, to ensure eligibility for a Dutch PhD examination.

Benefits

The position is intended as fully funded full-time (40 hours / week, 12 months / year) appointment in the service of the Netherlands Foundation of Scientific Research Institutes (NWO-I) for the duration of four years. After successful completion of the PhD research a PhD degree will be granted at one of the Dutch universities. Several courses are offered, specially developed for PhD-students. AMOLF assists any new PhD-student with housing and visa applications and compensates their transport costs and furnishing expenses.
