The Association of Public Health Laboratories - US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (APHL-CDC) offer paid laboratory internships to train and prepare college students for careers in public health laboratories. Interns assist laboratory professionals working on meaningful projects, like detecting genetic disorders in newborn babies, monitoring drinking water, tracking viruses carried by insects, and testing soil for environmental toxins. The Public Health Laboratory Internship Program offers an opportunity to earn a stipend while working alongside a mentor on projects that are only available in a public health laboratory setting. Interns will be introduced to basic laboratory science skills and will take competency-based core curriculum modules. Student interns will receive a monthly stipend based on the number of hours worked at the rate of $20/hour. On average, a public health laboratory internship runs for 12-16 weeks but it may be extended. The program application is open year-round, allowing for submissions anytime; start dates of the program will be either the 1st or 15th of each month. Intern placement is dependent on a host laboratory being near an intern. There are no relocation funds available for interns and they must be matched with a lab that is either near their university or is a commutable distance.
