The Washington Center (TWC) for Internships and Academic Seminars, an independent, non-profit organization, provides immersive internships and academic seminars to students from hundreds of colleges and universities and young professionals from across the U.S. and more than twenty-five countries. More than 55,000 TWC alumni have gone on to serve the public, private, and nonprofit sectors. They hold leadership positions in virtually every career field, including law, education, social work, medicine, journalism, diplomacy, business, and politics. During this 10-week (summer) or 15-week (fall or spring) program, students are immersed in a full-time federal work environment five days a week, assisting with projects and performing tasks that their internship mentor assigns. Internship placement may be in the Washington, D.C. area, or in one of several regional locations across the United States, where federal partner agencies have availability and internships that fit students' skills, interests, and career objectives. The Federal Diversity Internship Initiative is a fully funded program sponsored by multiple U.S. federal government agencies. Sponsorship covers the cost of the program, housing (if needed), and roundtrip travel to and from the internship site city. Interns are responsible for living expenses and local transportation; however, a stipend is provided to help alleviate these expenses.
