Under the supervision of the Senior Regional Technical Advisor, and the leadership of the Principal Technical Advisor, Climate & Forests Programme, the Programme Specialist will support programme design, financing, inception, implementation, reporting and closure across the Latin America portfolio of climate & forests.

As a member of the UNDP Climate Hub, the Regional programme specialist Internship will contribute to portfolio delivery and development.

Duties and Responsibilities for Regional Programme Specialist Internship

Support programme design, partnership building and resource mobilization for the climate & forests portfolio:

  • Support countries and UNDP country offices to prepare projects and initiatives that will help implement the NDCs, notably with regards to the forest & land sector.
  • Ensure coordination with other related initiatives and mechanisms in the region.

Provide programme implementation support to UNDP Country Offices and national counterparts:

  • Provide high-quality implementation support and oversight to UNDP country offices and national counterparts to support the successful implementation of the portfolio, across all relevant sources of funds in the region;
  • Provide quality assurance for relevant projects and initiatives;
  • Support the drafting and revision of project reports, evaluations and communications;
  • Ensure application of UNDP social and environmental standards, as well as any other relevant safeguards or standards;
  • Ensure mainstreaming of gender considerations in all key documents and processes;
  • Promote social inclusion and equality across the climate & forests portfolio in the region, including the rights of indigenous peoples.
  • Maintain updated workplans, portfolio and corporate information systems;
  • Ensure the timely preparation of semi/annual progress and final reports and other oversight documentation as necessary.

Support stakeholder engagement and social equality across the climate & forest portfolio:

  • Support national governments, civic stakeholders, indigenous peoples, gender-equality organisations and UNDP country offices to mainstream stakeholder engagement and social equality across the portfolio, from NDCs to field projects, with special focus on gender equality and indigenous rights.

Support knowledge management & communicate results derived from the policy and programme portfolio:

  • Represent UNDP in relevant fora and strategic initiatives, including UN inter-agency meetings as required;
  • Support the UN’s convening role by organizing and contributing to international events, such as policy dialogues and south-south exchanges;
  • Contribute actively to the Global Policy Network, including relevant Communities of Practice and other UNDP corporate requirements;
  • Contribute to the development of knowledge-based tools (including guidelines, articles, briefing notes etc.);
  • Contribute lessons, experiences and stories for the Climate and Forests webpage and social media, as well as other UNDP outlets.

The incumbent performs other duties within their functional profile as deemed necessary for the efficient functioning of the Office and the Organization.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:
  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in environmental management, international relations, sustainable development, public policy or other closely related field relevant for climate policy and sustainable development is required.
  • A first-level university degree (Bachelor´s degree) in the areas mentioned above in combination with additional 2 years of qualifying experience will be given due consideration in lieu of Master´s degree.
Experience:
  • Minimum 5 years (with Master´s degree) or 7 years (with Bachelor´s degree) of relevant international professional experience in climate policy & finance.
  • Expertise on climate policy, REDD+ and sustainable land & forest management is required.
  • Experience with international environmental processes & mechanisms desirable (e.g.: UNFCCC, GCF, UN-REDD).
  • Experience in designing and/or implementing projects at country and field levels is desirable.
  • Experience in multi-stakeholder processes is highly desirable.
Please note that continuance of appointment beyond the initial 12 months is contingent upon the successful completion of a probationary period.
Language:
  • Proficiency in both English and Spanish is required.
